Dandy Jack - Live PA - (Perlon) Geneva
Rithma Roadshow - Live - (Om Records, Utensil) Los Angeles
"Better Friends Through Music Since 1979."
Rithma was born in quiet a place, almost 'storybook hippy' if you will, to a rock singer and a Superman. But, all stories begin with a twist and nobody holds onto paradise for too long. Or do they?
Listening to Little Feat and Swan Lake, the infant (etienne stehelin) would spend long days taking apart electronics and running through the creek after pollywogs. But there came a time when Etienne freaked out about the onslaught of civilization on his beautiful land. He monkey-wrenched several bulldozers (rendering them unuseable), set fires, pasted anti-establishment billboards, and joined a liberation-front army. None of that really had any effect other than to mildly irritate people and never quite hit the source. Etienne changed his name to Steve, hid himself as an auto mechanic for a while, a welder, a carpenter and a rock & roll man, and soon went to high school in the haze of weed and skater-kids. Oh the social rollercoaster of public school in Southern California, leads one to question oneself and especially question the values of others...like, who am i with?... the jocks, the stoners, or the metalheads? And just for a moment, after breaking up with the rock band, there was a window, a wrinkle in time, right before the 'real' rave scene got ushered into alcohol funded nightclubs, where the young Rithma was born.
Acid House and "PLUR"? A real family of people our own age who actually treated each other with love??? He's in. And this music is like nothing he's heard before, save for the best dreams EVER.
Using skills he'd learned earlier from jamming out as a youth on his Mamma's analog synths and four track, combined with his technical savvy and the twisted inner mind of a "born again human", he decided to start being good to people and making music.
Long is the story of Etienne...making his way through the scene, the birth of the name Rithma on an acid-infused hike in the wilderness, releasing records and the journey to San Francisco, etc etc etc right up until the present time. With nearly 30 vinyl releases under his belt when he finished off his second full length album for Om, he's still loving every minute of this roller-coaster existence in the west coast dance scene.
In the latest chapter of this story, he's been building an essential live show with the wonderful vocalist Monica Brooke. Their intermingling of brief instrumental compositions with atypical house, varying electronic grooves and an undercurrent of funk and melody mesh fluidly together painting a picture of rare sonic beauty.
It is apparent that Rithma is musically wise beyond his years.
Believe ... and the family will find you....

Nino Moschella - Live - (Ubiquity Records) Oakland
The first time we heard 29 year old Nino Moschella we knew he had a magic touch. Gritty, soulful, and honest, his vocal styling and unique funk productions were a must-have for Ubiquity. Imagine our surprise when we learned that this golden voice belonged to a rough n'tumble Irish-Italian-American character from around the way.
Fellow Bay Area crooner Bart Davenport bought Nino Moschella to our attention. He mailed us a demo of tracks that had been recorded at Moschella's home studio. Working on only a 4-track tape machine, hand claps and broom-stick banging took the place of the usual computer driven drum loops. Innovating with limited resources his lo-fi studio situation provided the perfect gritty back-drop to a big and bold vocal talent.
Moschella's demo was a series of well-written songs with a unique and blend of 1960s soul and funk mixed with even a little bit of indie-pop and folk.
Moschella carries his DIY demo spirit through to his debut album, The Fix, to be released late May 2006. His first official release from this album is, "The Real Better Believe EP", which the influential music blog Music For Robots calls "absolutely fabulous...a record that Steve Wonder should be making in 2006." It also caused DJ Mag to label the EP "Single of the month" and state, "Cut from the same cloth as soul/funk legends Stevie Wonder, Prince, Betty Davis and Sly Stone, 29 year old, multi-instrumentalist Nino Moschella is what they call in A&R circles "a right f*cking find"."
Leading off with "Better Off", Nino plays almost all the instruments (as with most of his tracks) and makes most of the noises from drums to beat boxing. It's a minimal production keeping only the most essential elements in a bass-line driven rock n'soul style. On "Are You For Real" lo-fi stoner grooves on top are backdrop for Moschella who starts off subtle in falsetto but slowly builds to climatic scream. And on "Believe In Yourself" he adds a little gospel to the mix with a trippy organ section mid-way through. The Fix album continues the EP's fusion of genres and eras. With one foot firmly planted in the present Moschella's musical mash-up is also a reminder that there were days when bands like Jimi Hendrix played on the same bill as Led Zepplin, The Grateful Dead and Sly and The Family Stone. On The Fix he has found his own way of blending rock, soul, and funk and blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic music.
Born into a musical family Moschella's father was perhaps his first musical influence. "My dad sings and plays guitar. He started out in the choir and singing doo-wop in the Bronx," explains Moschella. "My mom sings lullabies, I had a great uncle Nino who played the violin and my grand folks were always singin'. You know, typical loud Sicilian folks always carrying on." Nino Moschella now lives with his wife Mia and recently born daughter in Friant, California, close to Yosemite, in a round house his father built with friends in the late 1960s. They also built a music studio on the property which is where most of his album is being recorded. There's nothing much but trees, creeks, coyotes, the sun, moon and stars to keep them company.
Moschella's first musical outing was at the tender age of 5 years old. His father told him to keep time on the snare drum for his rhythm and blues band because their drummer failed to show up for practice. "It was a rim shot on the three. I couldn't reach any of the peddles, so I kept it simple," jokes Moschella. But his drumming aspirations grew, and before deciding he'd write and sing, Moschella was set on being a jazz drummer. In fact he plays drums, beatboxes and bangs random items around the studio all over the album in-progress in addition to playing the majority of the instrumentation, too. "I play drums, bass, guitar, stuff with strings, stuff with skin, hand claps, string bass on my sweat shirt tassels," lists Moschella. "I'm workin' on my keys. I'm workin' on all that shit...always."
When Ubiquity Records first made contact with Moschella, propping up the bar at local East Bay haunt The Ivy Room, it was clear that he had not previously heard of Ubiquity and was someone with musical influences that didn't include the typical list of current funk and soul faves. He even suggested we might file his records between Caruso and Louie Prima, "In with the other Italian soul singers," he joked. Of his influences Moschella says, "In the last couple of years I discovered Donny Hathaway's music and voice. That dude was incredible," and added, "If I find myself getting clouded or too heady, I'll put on some Miles or Oscar Peterson or the Montgomery Bros. or Jimmy Smith. That seems to help center me on why I do this. You know, to play, express, communicate, and have fun. It seems like every other day something blows my mind even if I've heard it a thousand times. If American culture is blessed in only one way it is definitely the depth and richness of our music."
Playing the demos to a few label friends earned Moschella comparisons to everyone from classic soul artists like Michael Jackson to Little Beaver, and new acts like Little Barrie or Amp Fiddler. A new addition to his family, a bouncing baby girl called Estrella Icilda Rosemary Moschella Birdsong (!), has helped shape his recent recordings. And when he's not in the studio, or playing Poppa he confesses he's probably carrying out other Sicilian traditions either "Making love or making food."
Hipp-E - DJ - (Nightshift, NRK) San Diego
A native of the golden West, Hipp-e has pushed the envelope of dance music from the tender age of 16. After years of parties and inspiration from other DJ's and Producers, Hipp-e decided it was time to try his hand at making music that better suit the left-coast of the United States.
Teaming up with partner Halo, the two produced a hybrid sound that paired the jackin' beats of Chicago with the smoked out sounds of the Pacific. Known as the H-Foundation and 6400 Crew, they produced tracks for Siesta Music in their new home of San Diego, their new friends at Soma in Glasgow, label giant Hooj Choons, and even for the East coast legends at Yoshitoshi. As a result, they drew the attention of the world to the self-contained music industry of the West coast.
The next phase of his skyrocketing career saw him able to take his sound to the world in the form of his legendary DJ sets. Playing slots at Fabric London, Turbo Toronto, Zouks Singapore, Soma Glasgow, Twilo New York, More Amsterdam Pacha Buenos Aires, and Allenby Tel-Aviv turned the heads of the clubbers who thought they had seen and heard it all. His sets at raves in New Zealand, Montreal, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Brazil and all over the United Stateshave reintroduced the concept that prime-time doesn't mean prime-speeds and has the ravers listening for a change.
Even though one might wonder when he finds the time, Hipp-e has continued to push himself in the studio, developing a sound that belongs solely to him. His solo production for labels like NRK, Soma, Product Deluxe, and Tango has garnered instant reaction from international DJ's and has those more negative individuals that predicted some sort of Hipp-e / Halo backlash quickly zipping their lips. In addition to building his studio knowledge, Hipp-e is venturing into more unknown territory. As A&R for San Francisco based Tango Recordings, he is able to take his knack for finding amazing records to play out and apply it to finding upcoming producers from around the world who will help to shape the future of dance music.
With a DJ schedule that shows no signs of slowing down, and a resume that already puts him at the top of his field, and an ever growing potential in the studio, Hipp-e will continue to realize his dreams and inspire the rest of the industry.

'Echoes Tour' - (robot-karate.com, Aesoteric, apt) - Dallas
Junction SM - Live & DJ - (Kalk Pets) Geneva
The JUNCTION SM performance is all about a perfect mixture of dandy jack's live improvisation and sonja moonear's record selection. Jack's sets are routed through 2 channels of sonja's dj mixer in order to let her control the whole given sound. She can use his sounds as an additional source to her records, but also filter, cut or edit it with several effects. She pitches her records to Dandy's live set.
Sometimes Sonja mixes entire records over his sets, or sometimes she only adds a hi-hat, a bass drum or a simple melody. It can also happen that Dandy Jack improvises solos or additional rhythm patterns on top of Sonja's mixes that increase breaks efficiency. The magical thing is that everything is directly connected to the crowd. Rises and slopes modulate according to the audience's motivations. Depending on the development of the night, Dandy Jack can reload new sets while Sonja is taking over the dance floor, or she slows down her input and let Jack perform solo. The link between these two and the public provides the oxygen that keeps their performances vital. Out of this chemistry comes a wonderful tension that drives the night through till the early hours.
The generous and various source materials that flow through this junction leave the impression of a perpetual live production. You will never recognize any pieces, nor notice any repetition between their sets. The frontier between live sets and records just vanishes. Audiences get happily lost, while trying to decipher who is doing what on stage, the end result reliably being that it's more fun for everybody!
Jacob London - Live PA - (dotbleep, Classic) Seattle
Bob Hansen and Dave Pezzner were brought together by theunmistakable forces of The Universe in a period of time many of the World's civilizations have agreed should be referred to as "1992". The U.S.economy was looking up, and naturally Bob and Dave began to create relatively awful industrial compositions that they were not allowed to perform in their high-school's student talent competition. Taking the rejection in stride, they continued on until exposure to rave mega-anthems such as
L.A. Style's"James Brown is Dead" and Church of Extacy's "Ooowee I AmReady" caught their interest and inspired them to begin creating lo-firave mega-anthems of their own that were slightly (and increasingly) less awful than what they had been doing up until that point.
For years they immersed themselves in refining their sound and performing live PA's under a name that you don't really need, or want, to know about. By the time important people were busy convincing the World's population that it was "1998", Bob and Dave had taken the opportunity to releasetheir first record ("Hydrogenated Funk") on Carlos DaSilva's upstart eat House label, along with forging a new identity for themselves as JacobLondon. This record garnered them a moderate amount of attention from DJ Sneak and others, which they proceeded to not capitalize on for another 3 years or so.
In "2001" (for lack of a better term), the duo entered into a short-lived and well-respected business relationship with Jon Lemmon's Viva Recordings and were foolishly given free reign over their own record label, which they dubbed squid:records. They released three Jacob London EP'sover the following two years and pulled in two of their long-time house music heroes, Carl Finlow (aka Random Factor) and Tony Senghore, for remix duties. The squid releases were well-received and the unique sense of humor and personalitythat Bob and Dave saturated each of their productions with caught on and led to releases on Free the Funk, Stay True, Doubledown, U-Freqs, and Derrick Carter & Luke Solomon's enormously popular Classic label.
Recently, Jacob London have been neglecting important areas oftheir personal lives (hygiene not included) with a steady flow of remix offers and international gigging.

Neighbour w. Trever - Live & DJ - (new sound of Disco) Calgary/Victoria
Matt Neighbour has lived and breathed music since he busted out of the cradle. At age 5 he would cajole strangers with his beloved ukulele, later progressing onto
tackle learning the guitar and bass. After learning to play saxophones in the jazz band and plying his trade as a music teacher throughout high school, he moved on to Mount Royal College where he took part in the Jazz Studies program, with a guitar major.
Throughout, Matt continued to develop his skills as an instrumentalist and as a recording technician, learning on the classic four-track Tascam, then moving onto
serious multi-tracking and computer sequencing. A strong love for funk, soul, and disco developed as he worked at local record stores. Sure enough, these elements are ever present in his groove-drenched, infectious productions.
These days, when he's not producing or teaching music for Home Breakin', he spends his time playing gigs around town with various bands, DJ ing, and digging for the next chosen break, to transform it into funky black gold!
Trever splices ... and he dices, but most of all ... Victoria's own DJ Trever rocks the house ... hard! No classic rock tune or wicked R&B hit is safe Trever grasping it and having his way its' groove. Long overdue the happy man has joined the Renegade Sound System's team! This year, he and his friend Matt will cross the Soundwave site, to clobber the Daielektik Stage's audience with an onslaught of some of their signature funk bombs! Don't miss it!
